Agniveer Policy Shift: A new pathway to regular military service?

The Union Cabinet's decision to introduce an additional two-year engagement pathway for Agniveers could mark a significant evolution in India's military recruitment framework. Under the proposed arrangement, 25 percent of Agniveers will continue to be considered for regular service on merit, while the remaining 75 per cent may receive an opportunity for a further two-year engagement, after which eligible and willing candidates could be considered for regular enrolment, subject to selection criteria. The move potentially addresses one of the biggest concerns surrounding the Agniveer scheme – the limited duration of initial service and uncertainty over long-term military careers. For the armed forces, it could help retain trained personnel, preserve operational experience and reduce the cost of repeatedly training fresh recruits. However, the real impact will depend on transparent selection standards, vacancies, performance assessments and clarity over service benefits. The policy could improve career prospects, but its success will ultimately depend on implementation and the balance between military readiness and recruitment expectations.
