Centre Asking States for More IPS officers Amid Supreme Court Pushback?

Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan recently urged states to nominate more IPS officers for Central deputation to agencies like CBI, NIA, and CAPFs such as CRPF and BSF, citing persistent vacancies—36 out of 188 reserved DIG/IG posts as of late 2025. Despite 40% of senior IPS posts earmarked as Central Deputation Reserve, states often withhold mid-to-senior officers (SP to IG levels) or withdraw nominations post-selection, hampering cadre management. This move contradicts the Supreme Court's May 23, 2025, order to progressively reduce IPS dominance in CAPFs within two years, upheld after dismissing the Centre's review petition on October 28, 2025. Currently, 20% of DIG and 50% of IG posts in CAPFs are IPS-reserved, stalling promotions for ~13,000 CAPF officers.
