Come to Madhya Pradesh for authentic, rustic and raw experiences: Secretary Dr. Ilaiyaraaja UPDATED
Secretary, Tourism, and Managing Director of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, Dr. Ilaiyaraaja T, said that travellers should visit Madhya Pradesh for “authentic, rustic and raw experiences” that offer a genuine glimpse into the state’s unspoilt rural surroundings and local way of life. He emphasised that the state is truly the “Heart of Incredible India”, not only geographically but also because of its cultural diversity and warm hospitality.
Dr Ilaiyaraaja was addressing the National Tourism Organisation (NTO) Talk Session at the international travel trade show ITB Asia, held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore.
Dr. Ilaiyaraaja emphasised the need to diversify tourist traffic to reduce overcrowding at popular destinations. He observed that post-pandemic travellers are increasingly seeking new and distinctive experiences. “If necessity is the mother of invention, curiosity is the father of discovery,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of exploring new destinations.
With more than 25 per cent of its geographical area under forest cover, MP offers rich wildlife experiences, including tiger reserves and habitats of cheetahs, leopards, vultures and gharials. Pench National Park, associated with the stories of Mowgli and The Jungle Book, and river rafting on the Betwa in Orchha add to its attractions.
The state also boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites—Sanchi, Khajuraho and Bhimbetka—and 19 sites on UNESCO’s Tentative List. Its cultural identity includes Gond paintings, Chanderi and Maheshwari textiles, and Bhopal’s Zari-Zardozi embroidery.
To improve access to offbeat destinations, the state is expanding helicopter tourism. An agreement with the Spanish Film Commission is also expected to promote international film tourism. Women safari drivers and women-managed hotels reflect its focus on inclusive tourism.
Dr. Ilaiyaraaja invited international tourists and tour operators to experience rural life, traditional arts, local hospitality and cuisine, including Malwa’s poha-jalebi, Ratlami sev, dal-bafla and Morena-Gwalior gajak. He said the state’s festivals, natural beauty and welcoming communities offer visitors memorable experiences throughout the year.
