Fitment factor takes centre stage in 8th Pay Commission discussions

The fitment factor has moved to the forefront of discussions on the 8th Central Pay Commission, as it is expected to be the key driver of salary and pension revisions for central government employees and pensioners.
A fitment factor is a multiplier used to convert an employee's existing basic pay or pension into the revised pay structure. Under the 7th Pay Commission, a fitment factor of 2.57 increased the minimum basic pay from Rs 7,000 to Rs 18,000.
With the 8th Pay Commission now under way, the spotlight is firmly on the multiplier that will eventually set the tone for pay revisions. While no official figure has been announced, reports indicate that the fitment factor could land anywhere between 2.28 and 3.83. Employee unions, meanwhile, are continuing to push for a higher multiplier.
