With the Supreme Court working with 30 judges – four judges less than the sanctioned strength of 34, the Centre is awaiting recommendations from the Collegium to fill up the vacancies. The vacancies in question have arisen on account of retirements – first of Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the Chief Justice of India in November 2019 and subsequently Justices Deepak Gupta, R Bhanumati and Arun Mishra. The Collegium consists of the CJI and four senior-most Judges of the apex court.
