G Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Mines and Coal, unveiled the state-of-the-art handheld gamma-ray spectrometer, acquired by Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), during his one-day visit to Nagpur, on 13th February, 2025. The introduction of this advanced technology is poised to significantly enhance the exploration of Rare Earth Elements (REE) and other critical minerals vital to India’s strategic development.

The handheld gamma-ray spectrometer, known for its non-invasive, cost-effective, and high-sensitivity features, will revolutionize MECL’s exploration capabilities. I D Narayan, CMD, MECL, delivered an insightful overview of the instrument, emphasizing its transformative potential in identifying valuable mineral deposits, particularly rare earth elements. He highlighted how the new tool would provide MECL and other stakeholders a competitive edge in mineral exploration. The unveiling ceremony was attended by senior MECL officials, including Pankaj Pandey, Director (Technical), and Surendra Singh Kshatriya, Director (Finance). Speaking at the event, G Kishan Reddy commended MECL for its continuous efforts to advance mineral exploration and acquisition of cutting-edge technology that aligns with India’s mission of self-reliance in critical mineral resources.

Gamma-Ray Spectrometry in Mineral Exploration

Gamma-ray spectrometry is a globally recognized method used to map rocks and locate mineralization in diverse geological settings. The technology is especially effective in exploring rare metal and REE deposits, as primary host rocks are often enriched with incompatible elements such as K, Rb, Cs, Sr, Ba, Zr, Nb, Hf, REEs, Th, U, and Ta. The radioactive elements in these ores offer valuable exploration vectors, enabling more accurate discovery of new deposits.

Expansion of MECL’s Global Exploration Efforts

During his visit, G Kishan Reddy also reviewed MECL’s ambitious plans for expanding its exploration efforts beyond India. Through its JV  KABIL (Khanij Bidesh India Ltd.), MECL is currently engaged in exploration work for critical mineral blocks in Argentina. Looking to the future, MECL aims to broaden its scope by undertaking independent exploration projects under the National Critical Mineral Mission.

I D Narayan, CMD, MECL, presented a detailed framework outlining the company’s work plan for expanding these international exploration efforts. The  Minister reviewed the plan and expressed his support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of securing critical minerals globally to support India’s growth and self-reliance.
