IAS Abhijit Raut’s Dream Project:A Thriving Sports Hub and Support for Fertility Issues in Nanded (Maharashtra)

IAS Abhijit Rajendra Raut is 2013 batch officer of Maharashtra cadre and is currently posted as collector of Nanded, Maharashtra. His vision is to establish Nanded as the sports hub of rural Maharashtra, equipped with world class infrastructure and facilities. "We want to promote our district as the sports capital for rural Maharashtra" he stated

Nanded, known for its Gurdwara ,also boasts impressive sporting infrastructure including the Guru Gobind Cricket Stadium, an international-standard 10-lane athletics track, and government sports complex for indoor games like badminton and carousel.

Recognising this potential, Raut urged the Maharashtra Cricket Association to host a few Ranji matches in Nanded. Additionally under his leadership, over the past months nanded has hosted 14 national and state level championships, including wushu and fencing. "We are now capable of hosting almost every sport” he noted.

Beyond sports, Raut has launched an initiative addressing a less discussed but crucial issue-infertility.While analysing suicide cases among youth, he discovered that one major cause of distress was couples struggling to conceive "We realized many couples face emotional turmoil due to infertility, often caused by stress, PCOS, and lifestyle disorders," he said.

Under this initiative, every Thursday is designated as Fertility Day and a fertility OPD is started where gynecologists provide free counselling, conduct basic fertility assessments, and recommend necessary lifestyle changes. "We have seen that nearly 50% of cases improve solely through counselling and minor interventions like stress management, weight loss, and dietary modifications," he explained

For more complex cases, couples are referred for advanced treatment like IVF "In rural areas, many couples don’t have access to fertility clinics. Our initiative helps them avoid unnecessary out-of-pocket expenses. Many cases don’t even require expensive IVF treatments—they can be managed with basic medication and lifestyle changes," he explained.

"When couples come back with good news, that satisfaction is worth more than anything else," Raut concluded.
