IAS Rajat Pant’s Dream for Holistic Rural Development in Khowai, Tripura

IAS Rajat Pant is a 2019 Batch Officer of the Tripura cadre and is currently posted as the District Collector of Khowai, Tripura. His vision for the district focuses on holistic rural development with strong emphasis on child nutrition, livelihood generation, and financial independence.

Recognising the challenges faced by Anganwadis, a key part of rural childcare. Pant noticed concerns such as infant death rates, the need for proper sanitation, and consistent water supply. “I believe that if we can strengthen our interventions, particularly around early childcare for young children and pregnant women, we can make meaningful progress” he said.

Additionally to combat malnutrition, the creation of nutrition gardens in Anganwadis is in progress. “We’re encouraging the planting of fruit trees like banana and papaya because they require minimal care and, once matured, they bear fruit every year” Pant explained. These nutrition gardens provide a sustainable supply of nutritious food for both children and mothers.

The second focus under Pant’s leadership is bringing together various government schemes to improve livelihoods and boost income generation. To support Self-Help Groups, infrastructure is being developed. “For example, in tribal areas of Tripura, sheds have been provided to SHGs for rearing cattles, which gives them a good source of income” he explained.

The third focus is on enhancing the revenue of rural local bodies such as panchayats. Currently, most are heavily dependent on State Finance Commission grants or other. “We’re looking at ways to make them economically self-reliant. If panchayats have their own sources of revenue, they’ll be more motivated to manage and expand them efficiently” he said.

With an ambitious vision for rural development, Pant is working to transform Khowai into a model district for inclusive and sustainable growth.
