The WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC) over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea in its 50th Session held in Bahrain decided that India will host the PTC Secretariat during the next 4 years (2024-2027). The Director General of Meteorology will be the Secretary of PTC. The WMO/ESCAP PTC will function from the Office of Director General of Meteorology, India Meteorological Department (IMD), New Delhi. The objective will be to enhance multilateral cooperation in the meteorology, hydrology, disaster risk reduction, research and training capacity of the member countries with special focus on tropical cyclones risk management. Implementation of Early warning for all, impact based forecasting, risk based warnings, common alert protocol in the PTC member countries including Bangladesh, India, Islamic Republic of Iran, Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sultanate of Oman, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Yemen in collaboration with UNESCAP and WMO would be the focus areas.

Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, IMD thanked all the 13 members of PTC, WMO and ESCAP for electing India to host the PTC Secretariat during 2024-27.
