India-Canada Ties Reset Underway? Piyush Goyal’s Visit Signals Push to Revive CEPA Talks

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will visit Canada from May 25–27 in what government sources describe as a significant step toward resetting bilateral ties after a period of diplomatic strain under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The visit is aimed at advancing negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with Goyal expected to engage in a series of official, business, and industry interactions. A large delegation of over 100 Indian business leaders from sectors including energy, metals, automotive, telecom, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture will accompany him, underlining the economic focus of the trip.

Goyal is scheduled to meet Canada’s Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu and call on Prime Minister Mark Carney. He will also hold bilateral discussions with Foreign Minister Anita Anand to strengthen cooperation across key sectors.

Engagements with Canadian CEOs, startups, and pension funds are also planned. Energy security and transition are expected to dominate discussions, with civil nuclear cooperation continuing as a cornerstone of the partnership.

Officials indicate this visit could mark the most substantive reset in India-Canada relations in recent years.
