India may get six CJIs in as many years

India will see as many as six CJIs in a span of as many years. When current Supreme Court Chief Justice NV Ramana – who assumed office on April 24, 2021 – bows out in August 2022, he will be succeeded by Justice UU Lalit. Justice D Y Chandrachud will take over from Justice UU Lalit in November 2022. Justice Chandrachud will head the institution for two years before superannuating in November 2024. He will be succeeded by Justice Sanjeev Khanna, who retires in May 2025. Justice BR Gavai will take over from Justice Khanna and serve till November 2025.  Justice Surya Kant will succeed Justice Gavai as the CJI in November 2025. He will remain in office till February 2027.
