As a ferocious Covid-19 second wave has exposed potholes in the country’s healthcare system, the demand to create an Indian Medical Service on the lines of all-India services like IAS and IPS has gathered momentum again. According to sources, Indian Medical Association (IMA), the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) and the doctors’ association of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), among other medical organizations, have been raising this demand in the past and FORDA has also written to PM Narendra Modi in this regard. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare also favours the establishment of an exclusive service to revamp the health infrastructure.
