Is India Signaling Tibet Sensitivity as New Envoy IFS Vikram Doraiswami Visits Lhasa in Maiden Visit?

India’s newly appointed ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, has undertaken his first official visit to Tibet, a move being viewed as a calibrated diplomatic signal amid a tentative thaw in bilateral ties. Doraiswami, who assumed charge in Beijing last month and is known for his proficiency in Mandarin, arrived in Lhasa on Thursday, according to a statement from the Indian embassy.

The visit was officially described as a review of logistical arrangements for Indian pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar—referred to in China as Mount Gang Renpoche and Lake Mapam Yun Tso. The annual pilgrimage, suspended in recent years due to border tensions and the pandemic, is expected to resume later this month.

However, sources indicate the visit carries broader strategic messaging. By dispatching its envoy to Tibet early in his tenure, New Delhi is subtly reiterating its sensitivities regarding the region, which remains a core concern in India-China relations.

The outreach also reflects cautious efforts by both sides to stabilise ties following the prolonged military standoff along the Line of Actual Control.
