Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, who is a retired IPS officer of 1988 batch, and was appointed as the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of Assam has resigned. He is a former state Director General of Police (DGP). Actually, his brother Shyamkanu Mahanta had organized a high-profile music festival featuring popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. Garg was tragically found dead in the waters off Singapore on September 19, just a day before his scheduled performance. The Chief Information Commissioner’s office received multiple Right to Information (RTI) applications related to his brother. The Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has then recommended his ouster, citing a 'clash of interest' stemming from Mahanta's connection to the case.
