Justice Naresh Kumar Gupta, who served as one of the Judges of the MP High Court from May 3, 2010 to June 30, 2017, has performed outstandingly with the decisions of 48, 550 cases to his credit. In a tenure spanning 7 years and 2 months, he decided more than 48,550 cases. This equates to about 6,770 cases per annum, which is over 2.5 times the average disposal of judges in the country (which is about 2,500 per annum). Justice Gupta decided cases in all streams i.e. civil, constitutional and criminal. He had an excellent command over criminal matters (owing to his 31 years’ experience in the lower judiciary). In the last 18 months of his tenure, he decided more than 200 criminal appeals finally, while sitting as the Senior Judge in the Division Bench. Amongst his contemporary judges, he has laudable experience in matters relating to prevention of corruption cases. In the last 3 years, he dealt with a huge number of anti-corruption matters in the form of petitions and revisions. During summer vacations of year 2017, as decided by the Chief Justice of MP High Court and advised by the CJI, only 5 days’ sitting was resumed for the final hearing of Criminal Appeals and Justice Gupta decided 33 appeals and wrote 29 of those Judgements himself within that short period.
