Aisa kyon
I take the 6.20 Fast to Andheri from Churchgate . I'm late so I miss travelling with my Train Buddies. I carry the Evening Paper and a coffee... Headline is ... 'Modi says Government sensitive to Farmers issues'.
I open the paper to read inner pages and seeing the headlines the person sitting opposite exclaims: Ha ha ....but we still are getting robbed in broad daylight!!
I look questioningly at him and he says: Sir I'm a Farmer and I grow Onions... see how we Farmers get rooked......in retail they sell onion for 15 to 18/- per kilogram. But I sold 1500 Kg Onions to a Market in Maharashtra, sold it at 0.60/- /kg and at the end of the transaction I had to pay 475/- rupees from my own pocket for selling those onions!!! Why? Because I got just 0.60 paise/ Kg for my produce, my other expenses including the market commission, weighing of my produce, transportation, etc costs me the rest. So I got 509 Rupees for my onions, my expenses were 984 Rupees and I had to pay Rs. 475 . This is the state of affairs...
M: Sad ...
Farmer: See Government can easily make both Farmer and Consumers happy ...but for this Government will have to reduce the margins of Middlemen.... fix a procurement price and a sale price...
M: I see your point...flaw here is..only if the Government understood the numbers ...Farmers +Consumers out- number Middlemen ..its electorally stupid not to do justice to us ...
F: But catch point is neither Farmers nor Low and Middle Class Consumers ...who form bulk of consumers ... fund elections .. would it not have been sensible if I was paid say Rs 9 / Kgs for my produce ...Middlemen and Retail margin was Rs 10 / Kgs... collectively both these people still take in more than me ..
M: The Retailer always has one excuse for charging higher prices...Sahib Chaanti (sorted for the best) Maal hai..
F: So fix the grading prices...why allow shortchanging of the Farmer and rooking of the Consumer ...are Governments for only Middlemen and Retailers....
M: How about bringing the Farmer closer to the Consumer...
F: Ha ha ...I sold my onions to a Cooperative ...Cooperatives are the biggest crooks.... buy cheap and sell at market rates ...and usually the Cooperatives are run by Netas ... however ...I appreciate Modi's stand on doing away with APMC...bloodsuckers ... all operations Cartelised oe Unionised...be it Wholesalers Labour..or Transport ...
M: I'm going with a new perspective of the Farmers problems ...my station Andheri is coming ..
F: ( looking philosophical)...Yeh Dalalo ki andheri (cyclonic winds) humme siraf aur siraf Modi bachchaa sakthe hai...baaki sabh ko try karr liya hai... Dalalo se humme kaise bachaate joh khud Dalal hai!!!
