Zohran Mamdani’s rhetoric on PM Modi has raised alarms in the MEA

Zohran Mamdani’s rhetoric, particularly his comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has raised significant concerns within the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India regarding the optics for India and Indians in the USA. Mamdani, a newly elected Democratic socialist mayor in New York City, is vocal about his criticisms of BJP, which has ignited sharp debates not only within the Indian diaspora but also in Indian political circles. His comments risk deepening divides within the Indian-American community, as they provoke backlash from pro-Modi groups and Hindu organizations in the US, who view his rhetoric as divisive and anti-Hindu. This controversy complicates Indian diaspora diplomacy and could affect India’s image, especially given the political and economic ties between India and the US. MEA is wary that such rhetoric might fuel negative stereotypes and hinder the efforts to foster a cohesive Indian-American identity and positive bilateral relations at a critical geopolitical juncture. 

The Hon’ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha has appointed BJP MP Smt. Aparajita Sarangi as the Chairperson of the Joint Committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, which pertains to the Jammu and Kashmir region. According to sources, Sarangi has also been tasked with building a broad consensus among like-minded political parties to ensure smooth passage of the amendment. The assignment is seen as both a political test and an opportunity for her to demonstrate leadership and negotiation skills within the party. Her ability to foster cross-party support on a sensitive constitutional issue will play a crucial role in shaping her future trajectory in the BJP’s national setup.
