Is Govt ready for GST roll out?

The whole Finance Ministry is fully ready for smooth rolling out of GST successfully. Officials are busy to sort out probable hitch which could hamper roll out. A delegation of traders met with the FM on Thursday and sought some clarifications. GST is schedule to roll out from July1, 2017. According to experts, GST is the biggest tax reform of India.

GST was first conceptualized during Vajpayee regime

The general impression is that GST is the brainchild of the Congress but it was first conceptualized when Atal Behari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister. It was Vajpayee and his panel of economic advisors which included three former RBI governors IG Patel, Bimal Jalan and C Rangarajan who conceptualised the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 1999.

First committee on GST was set up by Atal Behari Vajpayee government in 2000 under the then West Bengal finance minister Asim Dasgupta. The committee was tasked to devise GST model, provide technological back up for new tax regime and logistics for rolling out the unified taxation system.
