Rising stars in Dalit Community
After a span of years, a number of leaders are emerging as Dalit leaders and becoming the voices for the Dalit community at national level. Here is a list of Dalit leaders who directly and indirectly influence Indian politics and struggling for Dalits’ social, political and economic rights in the country:
Prakash Ambedkar
Prakash Ambedkar, a lawyer by profession, is the eldest grandson of B R Ambedkar and politically active in Maharashtra. He has been three-time Member of Parliaments from Akola Constituency. Presently, he is leading political party ‘Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi’.
Chandrashekhar Azad (Ravan)
Chandrashekhar Azad (Ravan), a lawyer by profession, is the latest emerging face as Dalit leader. Chandrashekar Azad, who hails from Saharanpur district in Uttar Pradesh, founded Bhim Army in order to raise voice for Members of Dalit community against atrocities.
Jignesh Mevani
Jignesh Mevani, a lawyer by profession, became a voice of Dalit community in Gujarat. He is presently an Independent MLA from Vadgam Vidhan Sabha segment in Gujarat. He leads nationwide protest for Members of Dalit community against atrocities.
Rajratna Ambedkar
Rajratna Ambedkar is a great-grandson of Dr B R Ambedkar’s brother. He is a sociopolitical activist and President of the Buddhist Society of India. Besides, Secretary, Pancasila Samadana Standing Committee, the World Fellowship of Buddhist, Thailand, Bangkok.
Akash Anand
Akash Anand is nephew of Mayawati, former Chief Minister of UP and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Supremo. Anand, who earned an MBA degree from University of Plymouth, England, was inducted as Vice President in BSP. He is seen as emerging leader and leading legacy of BSP.
Dr Nitin Kashinath Raut
Dr Nitin Kashinath Raut is presently Cabinet Minister in the Uddhav Thackeray Government in Maharashtra. He is an MLA of Indian National Congress from North Nagpur Vidhan Sabha seat. He has been entrusted as Chairman, AICC for Scheduled Caste Welfare. Dr Raut, who earned a number of graduation and post graduation degrees including Ph.D, is seen as next Dalit leader after Mukul Wasnik.

Hemant Soren
Hemant Soren is son of Shibu Soren, founder of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). He is presently Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He is the voice of Dalit- Tribal people.
Chirag Paswan
Chirag Paswan is son of popular Dalit leader Ram Vilas Paswan. He is believed to be leading the legacy of his father. He is President of Lok Janshakti Party founded by his father. Chirag is politically active in Bihar.
