“Minus Gandhis, only Kamalnath able and acceptable face to lead Congress” - Our Survey

By Sanjay Sharma

The Congress, run by the Nehru-Gandhis as a dynastic behemoth, is facing a leadership crisis like never before. The fears that the party may fragment without a dynastic head also cannot be discounted as only a member of Nehru Gandhi family can bring ‘Some Unity among Congress leaders’ so vital for the revival of the Congress.

But since Rahul Gandhi has time and again indicated no desire to return as Congress Chief as he believes he can strengthen the party without being its president, the question that arises is that who can lead Congress Party minus Gandhi family.

It is in this context that the whispers in the Corridors.com has asked its surfers, “With  the Congress at its NADIR and Sonia Gandhi willing to be relieved of the burden and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra yet to pick up the nitty-gritty of ‘politics in India’, who is the able and acceptable face to lead Congress Party minus Gandhi family ?”

Congress is these days walking on razor’s edge. On the one hand acceptability of Gandhi family is continuously on decline among the voters and on the other only a member of this family can keep the party intact.

The only way out in such a situation is that the ‘family’ facilitates appointment of some of its staunch loyalist who is acceptable to all within the party, knows the nerve of Indian politics and is also able to confront the BJP.

And the majority of them thus rightly felt that Kamalnath is the only leader who fits in the bill. It is he who in 2018 MP Assembly elections, dethroned Shivraj Singh Chouhan after 15 years of its rule when the BJP was riding high on the crest of Modi Charisma.

It was not an easy task as the MP unit of Congress was riddled with factionalism. The leader made big efforts to bring together senior party leaders – former MP chief minister Digvijay Singh, Ajay Singh, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Arun Yadav and Suresh Pachouri – to avoid factionalism coming in party’s way to victory.

Kamal Nath, 74, also stands out among the many loyalists of Nehru-Gandhi family who has stood by the Parivar in the most difficult of times. Nath’s strong ties can be judged by the fact that he served five  generations of the family, starting his career in the Sanjay Gandhi, Indira Gandhi era, continuing in Rajiv Gandhi’s regime and to serving ,Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi.

Nath’s popularity can also be judged with the fact that Indira Gandhi had once described him as his third son who helped her take on the Morarji Desai-led regime in 1979.

Thus, the majority surfers said, “the visionary Kamal Nath who has been creation of Gandhi’s and who stood with the family in all the difficult times can be acceptable choice of most of the Congressmen in the country and very well lead the party as well”.

Few surfers also said that Well educated, internationally recognized  and mass based Kamal Nath, who is well known in the entire country, can steer the ship of the ailing Congress party. “In Madhya Pradesh he single handedly faced the mighty BJP by mobilizing resources in the recently held elections”.

He is now perhaps the only one who can engage with non-BJP Parties, because of his old connections with Mamta Banerjee, Jagan Reddy, Sharad Pawar, Udhav Thackeray, Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati, etc.

Some others, though few, however, favoured Ashok Gehlot followed by Sharad Pawar and Sachin Pilot.
