It’s evident that there is a growing power struggle within the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), with private sector banks becoming more assertive. Their recent attempt to capture the Chief Executive (CE) position, though unsuccessful, signals their increasing influence and strategic ambitions. Given their market share expansion and growing clout, it’s likely they will push harder for key positions in the next Annual General Meeting (AGM). At the same time, State Bank of India (SBI), traditionally a dominant player in IBA, seems to be dissatisfied with its functioning. This discontent could stem from concerns over governance, decision-making processes, or strategic direction. If SBI decides to take a stronger stance, it may either align with some public sector banks (PSBs) to counterbalance the private banks’ influence or push for reforms in IBA’s structure. A key concern appears to be the autocratic and undemocratic management of IBA by a specific group of bankers from an erstwhile bank over the past five years. If these individuals have been controlling key decisions, it’s natural that both private banks and even some PSBs may seek a course correction.
