The Supreme Court has allowed the opening of Vedanta's Sterlite plant in Tamil Nadu only for production of medical oxygen, even as the country grapples with a deepening oxygen crisis caused by unprecedented surge in coronavirus pandemic. TN government has ordered the closure of 400,000 tonne per annum Sterlite copper smelter in Tuticorin in May 2018 due to concerns about pollution.
