SC pulls up Centre for failure to fill vacancies in tribunals

Lashing out at the Centre for failing to fill 241 vacancies – including 20 presiding officers, 110 judicial members and 111 technical members – in 15 major tribunals, the Supreme Court has directed the Government to make it clear within 10 days about whether it wanted to continue the tribunals or close them down. Taking a serious note of the matter while hearing a petition seeking to fill up of the vacant posts, a bench comprising Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justice Surya Kant directed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to apprise the apex court of the matter, or else it may summon top officials to give reasons for not making the appointments.
