The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has constituted a six-member search committee – headed by SCBA President Vikas Singh – with the objective of identifying Supreme Court lawyers having vast experience for consideration for the post of high court judges. Other members of the committee are SCBA Vice-President Mahalakshmi Pavani and four eminent Bar members and senior advocates Rakesh Dwivedi, Shekhar Naphade, Vijay Hansaria and V Giri. According to the SCBA, the decision comes in the wake of Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana agreeing to its request to consider elevating Supreme Court lawyers as high court judges. Presently, advocates practising in the high courts and having a minimum experience of 10 years are considered for elevation as high court judges.
