The judge who defied Indira’s pressure; his son is now CJI

Newly-appointed Chief Justice of India UU Lalit’s father, Justice UR Lalit, served as Additional Judge in the Delhi High Court. At the time when then Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi declared Emergency, he was among the few bold judges who defied political pressure and granted bail to undertrial prisoners. Predictably, he paid the price as he was not confirmed as Permanent Judge by the Centre.
