UPSC revises guidelines to avoid favouritism in DGP’s appointments

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has tightened guidelines for the appointment of Directors General of Police (DGPs) in different states. Several states have appointed acting DGPs to bypass UPSC guidelines. The guidelines clearly state that a Police officer having at least six months of service left can only be considered for the post of state DGP. However, some states have appointed Police officers on the verge of retirement as the state DGPs and extended their tenure. A number of states have appointed acting DGPs, in-charge DGPs or DGPs with full additional charge. Now the revised guidelines would discourage states to appoint favourite officers.
