Wanaparthy Collector IAS Adarsh Surabhi’s Mission Madhumeha culminates

The 2018 batch IAS and Collector, Wanaparthy District in Telangana, Adarsh Surabhi, recently concluded the Non-Communicable Disease testing for diabetes for all 30+ (age) population in the district. The initiative named “Mission Madhumeha” was held from October 2024 and reached culmination in March 2025.

Giving insights of the report, the IAS said, “As part of the mission, all ASHA and ANM workers were trained to conduct Random/Fasting Blood Sugar Tests using Glucometers and an app was developed to feed the data. Out of the target 30+ population of 3,09,197, a total of 3,04,215 (98.4% of target population) persons were tested for diabetes and those with high Random Blood Sugar levels were tested for fasting sugar levels the next morning.”

He informs, “⁠A total of 19,643 cases of diabetes were detected in the district. Out of these, 2,857 cases are fresh diabetic cases.”  

Explaining the objectives of the Mission he says, “The idea was to study the prevalence of Diabetes in 30+ age group of residents; conduct preliminary (Random Blood Sugar Test) and confirmatory tests (Fasting Blood Sugar Test; establish presence of disease and support the patients through lifestyle modification methods and available treatments.

Apart from this, avers he, “The exact data available with the government is that of 2011 census. As on 12th August 2024, the estimated 30+ aged population of Wanaparthy district was 3,09,197 – which was surveyed.”

The collector also highlighted the methology used to carry out the mission. The first step was to train ASHA, ANM and Staff Nurses to conduct the finger prick test and use the Glucometer to study the blood glucose levels. The trainings were conducted by Medical Officers at the PHC level during the ASHA fortnightly meetings. Subcentre wise and PHC wise targets were fixed for the mission. The next stage involved ASHAs, ANMS and Health Assistants to visit the villages, conduct a door-to-door survey, reach out to the families and conduct RBS test on each person of the household who is aged above 30.

On a concluding note Collector Adarsh Surabhi says, “Out of the Total target of 3,09,197 - 3,04,215 persons were tested using RBS test i.e. 98.4% of 30 years above population have been tested.”

71% of the diabetic cases detected belonged to those from Rural Areas. However, this is also because Wanaparthy district is largely Rural in Nature - 78% rural households.

The diabetic patients have been put to treatment and are being provided with active lifestyle modification and diet counselling, which is the need of the day.
