West Bengal closes 252 madrasas following statewide infrastructure review

The West Bengal government has ordered the immediate closure of 252 madrasas across the state following a comprehensive review of their infrastructure, management, and approval status. In addition, around 100 other institutions have been issued show-cause notices, requiring them to provide valid authorization to avoid similar action. Officials clarified that madrasas operating with proper approvals and adequate facilities will remain unaffected.

The statewide assessment, which began in June, saw the highest number of closures in the Malda, Uttar Dinajpur, and South 24 Parganas districts. This sweeping decision has ignited a fierce political debate. While BJP leaders have welcomed the crackdown on unauthorized institutions, opposition parties have strongly criticized the move, alleging that it unfairly targets the minority community.
