Lt Gen Naravane had assumed charge as Eastern Command Army Commander in October 2018.He is the top contender for post of Chief of Army Staff when incumbent Gen Bipin Rawat retires in December this year.

There are indications emerging from the Defence Ministry corridors that the appointment of Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen M M Naravane seems certain as the next Army Chief as the Government may stick to seniority and merit principle.
