Will India reciprocate by giving additional charge to the Ambassador of India to US ?

With Washington giving its Ambassador-designate to India,  Gor, the unusual dual charge of Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, speculation arises on whether New Delhi will reciprocate. If so, Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra in Washington could get an expanded mandate or an additional charge.

However, India traditionally keeps bilateral and regional roles separate, with South and Central Asian affairs handled directly from the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. 

For now, it seems unlikely that India will mirror the US move but the signal hasn’t gone unnoticed and New Delhi is weighing .

Indian Embassy had earlier signed a $75,000-per-month retainer with Mercury Public Affairs that started in August 15. The three-month deal marks a more assertive approach as New Delhi seeks to counter Pakistan’s lobbying efforts, which outspend India nearly three to one.

The move signals that India is no longer content to rely solely on traditional diplomacy. Instead, it is tapping into D.C.’s lobbying machinery to push its strategic narrative, shape congressional debates, and secure a firmer place in America’s policy orbit.

This lobbying push may prove less about outpacing Pakistan and more about ensuring India’s voice resonates at the highest levels of Washington power.
