The Union Cabinet approved a proposal to introduce the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament. Addressing a press briefing in New Delhi on Tuesday, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, the Bill seeks to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act,1956 to increase the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court by four, from the present 33 to 37, excluding the CJI.
