IAS Dr. Sachin Ombase upgrading cremation facilities in Dharashiv District

IAS Dr. Sachin Ombase belongs to the 2015 batch, Maharashtra cadre, and is currently posted as district collector of Dharashiv District, Maharashtra. His vision for the district

prioritizes uplifting community life by developing dignified cremation facilities accessible to all, regardless of religion or caste.

Recognizing the need for dedicated cremation space which had previously caused tension between communities and lack of Basic Facilities such as Shed, Water, etc – Dr Ombase launched an Crematoriums for all or Gav Tithe Smashanbhumi  Initiative "Many villages lacked dedicated cremation land, so we have acquired land in 361 villages, including purchases in 151," he noted.

Under his leadership dedicated cremation lands have now been allocated in 361 Villages and sheds have been constructed in 330 Villages. Additionally, a total of 132 burial ground sites have been designated for OBC and minority communities across eight blocks of Dharashiv District.

The initiative was implemented in 4 phases with a budget of Rs 30 Crore. In the first phase, a survey of land availability was conducted across 361 villages. Phase two involved identifying government land. In phase three, private land was identified and purchased in 151 villages. Finally, in phase four, funds were allocated to construct sheds in 330 villages.

Through this initiative Ombase has aimed to empower and impact various aspects of community life by Enhancing Accessibility and Inclusivity, fostering Respect for Cultural and Religious Practices, improving Public Health and Hygiene and providing Economic Relief. Families can now perform cremations locally, allowing them to honor their loved ones with dignity within their villages.
