NIA Chief Sadanand Date is ahead in race

National Investigation Agency (NIA) Chief Sadanand Date figures prominently in the list sent to UPSC by the state government for the selection of new DGP. If picked, Date can get a two-year term as Maharashtra’s top cop. However, his appointment would require the Centre to relieve him from his current role as NIA chief. The state government is likely to make the formal request to the centre in this connection soon. Date is the senior-most Police officer in the list sent to UPSC. He will retire on December 31, 2026 but if picked, Date can get a two-year term as Maharashtra’s top cop. Having worked with various central agencies, he is widely respected for his track record. He has battled terrorists during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, armed with only an outdated carbine.
