whispers in the corridors
IAS Shilpa Sharma belongs to the 2015 batch of Karnataka cadre and is currently posted as the Deputy Commissioner of Bidar, Karnataka.
Regarding her vision for the district, Sharma's focus is on empowering women with a strong emphasis on addressing anemia, a critical issue for maternal health. “We have initiated the ‘Anemia Mukt Bidar’ program, modeled on the lines of Anemia Mukt Bharat,” she said. “This initiative is being implemented with a focused approach. We are conducting tests and increasing awareness, primarily targeting pregnant women.”
The initiative uses the Sahli test method to measure anemia levels, classifying it into three categories: mild, moderate, and severe. Hemoglobin levels above 11 are normal,9-11 are mild anemia,7-9 is moderate and anything below 7 is considered severe. Explaining the treatment provided she stated “For mild cases, we provide Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) tablets as part of the regular course of treatment. For moderate cases, we organize iron sucrose injection drives, which are available at Primary Health Centers. Severe cases, with hemoglobin levels below 7, require blood transfusions conducted at district hospitals”.
Additionally, Under her leadership, a unique program was initiated to celebrate Children’s Day and International girls Day titled ‘Ek Din Ka Adhikari’.In this 10 students were invited from each school to various offices including the collector's office, CEO zilla panchayat office, post office, and more. “ They were made to sit in the officers chairs and were shown how the offices function. We explained the movement of applications, government schemes, helpline numbers, and issues like domestic violence and agricultural support. This gave them exposure to how the government works .”
In the other half of program, ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ was launched with five women brand ambassadors of the district, identified from different talukas who have excelled in their careers “One has gone to Indian Idol, one has become a KS officer, one has excelled in karate and likewise,’ she noted. Additionally, mugs featuring their photographs were launched to inspire the community "We used an innovative and meaningful approach for information and educational activities, Through these efforts, when these children go back home, they talk with their friends, parents, and relatives. It was morale-boosting and effective information communication for us as well,' she said.
