EC to announce Nationwide SIR tomorrow! (UPDATED)

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to hold a press conference tomorrow at 4:15 PM to announce the launch of a nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. According to sources, the first phase will cover 10 to 15 states, including Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and Puducherry, which are scheduled for elections in 2026. The SIR aims to update voter lists from scratch, ensuring the removal of ineligible voters and verifying the authenticity of new entries through comprehensive door-to-door verification. The process follows a similar cleanup concluded in Bihar, where the final roll listed 7.42 crore electors after intensive verification. The Commission has instructed Chief Electoral Officers nationwide to finalize their preparations and will exclude states currently conducting local body elections from this phase.
